‏When people hear “Saudi Arabia,” they often imagine long black abayas and white thobes. But traditional Saudi clothing is far more diverse, colorful, and expressive than most realize.

‏What Do Saudi Women Wear?

‏While many women wear the abaya—a long cloak that can be black or designed in modern styles—this garment has evolved into a fashionable statement. Today, abayas come in a range of colors and fabrics, often adorned with embroidery, lace, or patterns inspired by cultural heritage.

‏In larger cities, it's common to see women expressing their personal style through elegant, custom-tailored abayas that blend tradition with modern flair.

‏And What About Men?

‏Men traditionally wear the thobe—a long robe, usually white, which varies in fabric based on the season. In winter, heavier materials keep them warm, while summer brings light cotton fabrics. The outfit is often completed with a ghutra or shemagh(head scarf) secured by a black agal—a symbol of cultural pride and masculinity.

‏Regional Influences:

‏Each region in Saudi Arabia has its own unique take on traditional attire. The southern region is famous for vibrant patterns and detailed embroidery. In the western Hijaz region, you’ll find Ottoman-style influences, while central Najdi attire reflects simplicity and elegance.

‏During weddings and cultural events, clothing becomes an expression of identity and joy. Brides wear stunning gowns with intricate gold embroidery, and men often wear the bisht, a ceremonial cloak reserved for special moments.
